Description
Council Bluffs Changing Scene--A horse-drawn trolley passes the Masonic temple at Fourth St. and Broadway back in 1888 when this sketch was drawn. Note the carbon arc light tower at the left of the building. The tower marked the debut of the marvels of electricity in Council Bluffs in 1883. This artist's conception of the Masonic Temple was published in the View Folder by Frank Cook.
[Companion photo from 1954 is not in the file, but the caption for it in the Nonpareil reads: "Today...the trolleys have disappeared, but the building stands as it did in 1888--minus the tower on top of the Masonic Temple. Aside from that, there is no major change in the looks of the building except the businesses on the ground floor."]
