Description

Fort Peck's Power Plant . . . is one of the highest buildings in Montana. A height of 271 feet is needed to enclose surge tanks that prevent water from reservoir tunnels damaging generator turbines. Four 24-foot tunnels, each about 1.25 miles long, bring reservoir water under the dam. One serves the power turbines, the other three permit release of storage water into the Missouri River. In the foreground are concrete baffles, used to de-energize water and prevent bank erosion.
