(top) New desks are a nice thing - until it comes time to move the accumulation of years of toil. This is how the Nonpareil's newsroom looked before the transformation. Some of the desks had been around for longer than most want to admit remembering.

(middle) But The After-Effect Is Nice . . . Streamlined, colorful desks now grace the most hectic office in the building where telephones ring from dawn to dusk, punctuated by the insistent chatter of the fire service machines and typewriters. One newsroom sage drawled as he unpacked another box of junk, "Was this trip necessary?"

(bottom) After The Drawers . . . were cleaned out and the desks moved, finding space to work was a problem for staffers. Here Assistant Sports Editor Steve Riso uses a chair as a temporary table to type a story. Telephones were piled in the middle of the room like so many sweepings from a broom.
