Description

Kronberg Castle at Elsinore, Denmark, is framed here by an arch in the ancient wall, still protected by a moat, that stands on The Sound separating Denmark from Sweden by a short two miles. A group of Nonpareil European Holiday visitors clustered around a guide as she related the history of this 12th century building, made famous by Shakespeare's "Tragedy Of Hamlet." Ancient cannons still stand on the ramparts overlooking The Sound, dating back to the days when shipping paid a tribute to the Danes for use of waters leading into the Baltic Sea. Toll was collected until 1857 - and modern Danes still believe it was a mistake to drop it. Kronberg was the last historic place visited before the group returned after three weeks touring in Europe.
