Tuesday was Opposite Day, Wednesday was SO's Day, Thursday was Neon Day and Slave Day, and Friday was Spirit Day. Everyone looks forward to Spirit Week and all of the activities it brings. RIGHT; Go mighty Eagles!! 6 �Eagle Victory Right: Eagles working to a victory It was the first time in 4 years that the Eagle football team came away from a Homecoming game the winner. We went into the game with a 1-1 record . During the second quarter we scored with two seconds left on the clock with a 36 yard pass to Jason Bardsley. RI GHT: Ano ther touc hdown for the team1 �Corona ti on 91 "Coronation 91" was a very enchanting evening. The theme was "WE ARE THE ONE AND ONLY". The Homecoming Court consisted of Dee Gach, Sara Justesen, Tina Collins, Kelli Kennedy, Melinda Deal, Carrie Potter, Brad Arrowsmith, Jared Powell, Curt Christensen, Dana Carman, Rue Hough, and Brent Dohse. Rue Hough was crowned King and Tina Collins was crowned Queen. The Court would like to thank Jared Carman and Traci Bloom for introducing the canidates. Also Connie Casson for pinning the fine flowers on the men and Justin Kinney and Mark Sutton for the fine roses for the young ladies. It was an enjoyable evening and people should remember it for a long time to come. �The Homecoming Dance was held after the wonderful coronation . The totally awesome music was provided by Mr. Tunes 'and they did a superb job. Students danced until 11 :30. The dance turnout was probably the best in the past few years. The proud students of Underwood had one of the best Homecoming Nights ever!! 9 �WHOA, On November 8th and 9th the Underwood Middle and High School choirs presented their annual variety show. The show was held on the high school stage. It was a roaring success, with both nights being sold out. Friday night was standing room only. The theme for the show was centered on tv and favorite television reruns. Some of the favorites were the Energizer Bunny and the Lucky Dog. Mrs. Wallin said "I received more letters and calls on this year's show than on any previous show." She also said that she was very pleased with the students' performances, and with the enthusiastic audience response. This year a lot of the same fads and fashions came into play except there was more emphasis on them. For example, a lot of the same brand name clothes were worn, except they had the latest style and more emphasis was put on advertising their brand name with popular patches and symbols. Another growingly popular fad is the e-.;er popular rap music. Rap music has taken over the teen world. More and more teens have caught on to wearing the same clothes as the popular "rappers'' wear and a lot of teens have taken up the same dance style as our favorite "rappers", too. Although rap music has grown so popular, we cannot forget all of our favorite rock groups which influence us day by day. Some of the most popular are Skid Row, Metallica, Firehouse, Motley Crue, and of course New Kids On the Block. Another new trend for teens is listening to country music. A few of the country stars include Garth Brooks, Hank Williams, Jr., Clint Black, Oak Ridge Boys, and Randy Travis. Before we close this years story of Fads and Fashions we cannot forget our favorite past-time, T.V. Some of the favorite television shows of teens include the Simpsons, Doogie Howser, M.D., Beverly Hills 90210, and .Full House, just to name a few. �~ . ' .. I ' N . We have had several assemblies this year at Underwood. They ranged from pep assemblies to presentations against drugs to messages for students both academically and athletically. Bernie Saggua visited on October 15. He is the chairman of the Iowa Boys Athletic Union. Several students helped to make Mr. Saggua's visit a pleasant one, they were Rue Hough, Mark Rollins, Carrie Potter, Sara Justesen, Jason Bardsley, Jim Hobbs, Kelli Kennedy, Judd Hawkins, Ann Hough , Connie Casson, Nicki Belt, Tina Collins, and Heather Leaders. Also, visiting to tell us how to "Walk the Talk " , was Officer Pauley. He spoke about the dangers that deal with the use of drugs and alcohol. He gave a very energetic and entertain ing talk. Many pep rallies were taking place throughout the year. The cheerleaders did a fine job of keeping the school spirit up. Even though our Christmas Dance was cancelled due to bad weather, we made up for it with other dances. There was, of course, Homecoming and Prom, along with the Sweetheart's Dance and a St. Patricks's Day Dance. All of the events were a success and a fun place to get together with friends. Right : Slowin' it down one more time. 17 �Unforgettable Prom 1992 �Prom was held at Underwood High School on Saturday, May 9, 1992. The theme was "Unforgettable." The Junior class decorated in the colors purple, green, black. and silver. The prom meal included a rel ish tray, garden salad. fillet of chicken breast, rice pilaf. green bean cassero le, dessert tray, an d punch. Prom servers were sophomores, Nikki Bach, Lisa Ett lema n, Monica Kampman, Mandi McManigal, Jami Strum, Chris Tamms, Chad Brown, Jay Collins, Brent Gillett, Adam Justesen, Trent Leonard , and Matt Malnack. We had an excellent D.J., Mr. Tunes, for the dance. Just Above: Just look at tho" crazy guys under th at mat. �SPEECH Conference, District, and State Speech contest, headed by Mrs. Larsen went extremely well this year. Fifteen students, includ ing one freshman, one sophomore, three juniors and ten seniors attended Conference Speech on February 19, 1992 at IWCC. Of those students, eleven advanced to districts on February 29 at Fremont-Mills in Tabor, Iowa. Six students, including Cullen Chollett, Rue Hough, Mark Blair, Melinda Deal, Jami Waldmann , and Janet Ross advanced to State Speech Contest on March 21 , 1992 in Norwalk, Iowa. Their ratings were outrageous! All of the students did an excellent job at all competitions, especially State. All of the students at least rated a II , there were no Ill ' s given. Cullen is the only one that advanced to All-State Speech at UNI in Cedar Falls. They hold two bloodmobiles, one in the fall and another in the spring. The National Honor Society's induction was February 22, 1992. There were eight people inducted . These people met many requirements. They had to maintain a 3.00 GPA for three consecutive semesters. The teachers also have a part in the picking of the inductees. They plan homecoming, and the junior cabinet gets the Prom Committee started on planning Prom. They have many outside activities and represent our school very well. We improved the paper greatly by writing more stories and laying it out better so there weren't any lines. Cullen Chollett was the Editor and did a great job! We have learned a lot and had a great time taking pictures, developing our own pictures, and laying out the yearbook. Kelli Kennedy was the Editor of the yearbook and has done a wonderfu l job along with the staff to make our schools yearbook the best. Top: The publications crew! And from then on we have focused our attention on doing the best we could do. The results were the following : 1st at Conference, 2nd at The Cedar Rapids Competition, 2nd at Apollo , and a Division I rat ing at State. Above right: Look at those muscles! Above: Hawaiian Punch; the swing choir performed for a fundraiser for the Athletics Boosters. Here's a little sample of "Every Day I've Got To Sing Some. " Left: Over here we have a bunch of foolish high school students acting like chickens in our novelty, "Concherto for Chickens." Carmen Wallin started her career in 1979 at Underwood High. She has brought nothing but success to the Underwood vocal program. Check out these numbers. Out of all the years she's been here at Underwood she has had a total of 516 groups go to small group contest, and out of those 516 groups, 275 received division I ratings. That 's over 50 % ! The swing choir, (Underwood Unlimited) goes to state competition all the time to see how jhey are doing as far as ratings go. After all these years we are still receiving l's from all three judges. The swing choir has never received any less. Mrs. Wallin had a total of 32 All-State members and 26 Iowa High School music awards for outstanding performances at small group contest I We're going to hate to see her go, because we know that no one can do the job like she did. The 1990-91 softball team had a close and exciting season. The season was filled with hard work and lots of team effort. The highlight of the season was that they ended up Western Iowa Conference Champions with a record of 13-1 . The Eagles attended many tournaments, put forth a lot of effort, and always placed in the top half. For tournament play: in the Underwood tournament they placed 3rd out of six teams, in Western Iowa Conference they placed 3rd out of eight teams. They had the honor of playing in the Southwest Iowa Classic with some of the toughest teams in Iowa, and finished with a 2-2 record. Then they traveled to Ballard Huxley and placed 8th out of sixteen teams. At the Treynor Tournament they placed 2nd out of eight teams. In Sectionals they placed 2nd out of four teams. In Regional play, they almost returned to state again, but lost a hard fought game to OrientMacksburg . The Varsity season awards and honors went out to many people. All-Conference awards went to: 1st Team- Saundra Brown-infield, Tricia Christensen-1st base, Lila Kephart-outfield . 2nd Team- Dee Gachpitcher, Paula Hiller-catcher, Carrie Potter-infield. All Southwest lowa-Nonpareil-1 st Team-Saundra Brown-infield, Lila Kephart-utility. 2nd TeamTricia Christensen- 1st base, and Honorable Mention, Dee Gach-pitcher, Paula Hiller-catcher. Class 1A All-District went to Saundra Brown for short stop. Chosen for the West Squad AllStar game was Saundra Brown, who was also named 1991 Omaha World Herald Athlete of the Year and 199 1 Council Bluffs Nonpareil Athlete of the Year. All-State honors were given to Saundra Brown who was chosen 2nd team short stop. Lila Kephart received Elite Special Mention for outfield. Dee Gach-pitcher, Tricia Christensen- 1st base, and Paula Hiller-catcher were given Honorable Mention. The team also chose end of the season awards. Outstanding Defensive player went to Tricia Christensen. Outstanding Offensive player went to Saundra Brown . Rookie of the Year was Sara Justesen. Most Valuable Player was Lila Kephart. Coming off of the season with a 3-6 record. To lead the Eagles were seniors: Dana Carman , Brad Arrowsmith , Jason Bardsley, Curt Christensen, Craig Wiggins, Rue Hough, and Ed Jackson. They came out with a good start, then started to decline towards the middle, but fought back hard in the end. They have nothing to be ashamed of. It all started on a hot summer day in the weightroom and ended on a cold, dark fall night against the state runner-up A.S .T. Team captains for the Eagles were Dana Carman, Curt Christensen, and Jason Bardsley. This year Jason Bardsley and Judd Hawkins made 1st Team All Conference. Curt Christensen and Todd Leonard made 2nd Team All Conference. Dana Carman and Jay Collins made All Conference Honorable Mentions. It takes a lot of commitment and courage to go to a different school and ran with people from that school. Our team ran with different people because this is the second year in the sharing program with the Tri-Center Cross Country team. It is difficult because the runners seem to lose their identities as an Underwood runner. But the combination of Tri-Center and Underwood proved to be a success. Marty Dalton son of Coach Pat Dalton placed 16th in the State meet . Also Helena Reiber qualified for state but was not allowed to ru n because she arrived late due to car trouble. As a team throughout the season the Tri-Center-Underwood group also did well. Th ey placed 1st in the Treynor Invitational, placed 4th in the Atlantic Invitational an d they placed 6th in the District meet at Atlantic. The Eagles assured an exciting season with many down to the wire games. Mr. Martin taught the team discipline and patience throughout the year. The season started at Malvern where the weather was cold, but the Eagle shooting wa s not. The Eagles then had high hopes for the rest of the season. The Eagles fell short of their very high expectations due to the very tough WIG. The Eagle team awards included: Brent Dohse, Most Improved; Judd Hawkins, Free throw award; Brad Arrowsmith , MVP. The " Super 8," c oached by Lewis Curtis and Kevin Hough, placed in the top half of every tournament, posted an 8-6 dual record and fin ished in the top ten at the state tournament (8th) . " Below: Curt ends with a burst of speed. Below right: Here comes Todd .· The Eagle track team was probably the biggest team we've had in a long time. With the large num bers and the good work ethics of all the runners, Coach Ray Spiegel was in heaven . The Eagles set many tough goals at the beg inning of the year. They reached many of these goals and came very close to others. One of the goals was to win a track meet and the Eagles went out and did.just that. The Eagles won the Tri-Center Invitational in a very dramatic fashion, having to place no less than second in the final race of the evening. That was the first track meet an Underwood team had won si nce 198 which was also the Tri-Center Invitational. Although the Eagles did not send anyone to State, the Eagles still viewed the year as a success. The Eagl es fi nished 111 the top half of all their meets except for two which was also a goal. Coach Ray Spiegel was quoted as saying, "I'd like to thank everyone for their great work ethics and the work of ever individual was greatly appreciated. Eleven girls gathered in the middle school cafeteria not knowing what to expect . They started with a routine that was for state contest during the first week in December. They took "Pump Up The Jam" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy'' and earned division II ratings on both. The team spent the rest of the season entertaining at basketball games and wrestling meets. The highlight of the season was the light routine to "Looney Tunes" for the first time. For each dress -up day there were points awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd , and 4th place winners . Also , points were awarded for banners, skits, and hall decorations . The Seniors ended up with the victory with 1350 pts. The j uniors closely fo l lowe d with 112 5 pts., Sophomores showed 825 pts., and last, bu t not least, were the Freshmen with 725 pts. The Seniors were awarded a pi zza pa r ty for their win! Another change was the Coronation and Spirit Night being held on Wednesday night. The night was fi lled with spirit and m any activities , including the class skits and the crowning o f the 1992 Ki ng and Q ueen! The sentence had the town of Langtry, Texas in a stew. Bad men wanted Orin to swing , good citizens wanted him to live . Liddell when he spoke during Red Ribbon Week. Spirit Night brought back memories for all who attended. I 0 Asse mbli es any assemblies have come to Underwood in the past year. Whether it be a somber account of the e ffects of drug and alcohol abuse, or a fun gathering of choir members from Missouri , they all gave us something to think about. The Red Ribbon Week presentation showed us the chilling realities o f living with drug and alcohol addiction . Hearing the stories of those kids made us realize what drugs can d o to a person 's life. Needless to say, the poin t hit us all pretty hard . But t his y ear's presentat ions w e ren · t all so seri o us. The arrival of the Celebratio n sw ing choir from Nort hw est M issou ri brough t some fun to all o f us w ith t heir fu n renditions o f popu lar t unes, as well as performing songs that aren 't so well known . O f course, w e m usn ' t forget the m any pep rallies that did thei r very best to raise school spirit. We here at Un derwood sincerely thank those who gave presentatio ns to us. Part of this band of seniors shares something amusing!! A lumni come together for Spirit Night. �Jobs and Careers J obs and careers. What do they mean? For many they mean extra spending money for personal uses and for others they mean absolutely nothing. As we look at the high school students that have jobs, most of them work at fast-food places or work at the Mall. Obviously most of the high school students don't have a career yet, unless they' re way ahead of their time. Most just want to spend their high school years working for petty cash, if any cash at all. jobs are an important part of life, they teach a person responsibility, how to manage money and they help to give a person a great personality. Not to mention that they' re a great way to meet new people and broaden a person 's horizons. Here are just a few of the many jobs that people at U.H .S. have. The Homecoming Dance in October, the St. Patrick's Day Dance, sponsored by SODA and the Underwood Optimists in March, and the junior-Senior Prom in May were the memorable three. The St. Pat's dance was sponsored by SODA and the Opitmist Club in memory of Misty Tamayo and that fatal accident one year ago. The theme for Prom this year was "jungle of Love " . The junior class made a few changes in the way Prom was held , but it still left great memories for all those who attended. Ms. Elbert worked many long, hard hours on the newspaper and helped students improve their yearbook pages. They thank her for all · of her hard work and dedication . As w ith any other activity , the journalism class had to raise money and doing so, they had to sell ads (a very fun day) , work some concession stands , and of cou rse sell yearbooks. Besides changing yearbook com panies and using the computer for the newspaper there were a lot of changes. They all had a fun y ear and learned a lot from this class . They planned a very nice Homecoming and they sold candy bars during lunch to raise money. They visited Guthrie Center for more ideas for functions and organizations for future years to come. In the future, the Student Council and Cabinet will be more useful , because the administration wants them to become more involved. They have also been thinking about changing the way people are elected to the offices. Each person will hav e to make a speech in front of their class, so they can be elected to the office they are most interested in. Although it was a young team, they worked very hard and played with much dedication throughout the entire season. The Eagles were up against some tough teams this season, not just in the Western Iowa Conference, but in tournament play too . Some standings in tournament play were: in the Atlantic Tournament, there were 11 teams competing against each other in a round robin fashion, but no team standings were given, at the Underwood Tournament there were 5 teams and the Eagles took 2nd place. At the Roland Story Tournament the Underwood team was up against some of the most competitive teams in Southwest Iowa and the Eagles placed 14th out of 16 teams. In Western Iowa Conference action , out of 8 teams Underwood took 5th place. In the Treynor Tournament there were 8 teams and they finished in 4th place. The Varsity Team finished with a season record of 14-21 and a conference record of 9-5. The Junior Varsity finished 34 Softball 10-5 for a season record and a 6-2 conference record . The team put forth a lot of effort and hard work to make the season fun and unforgettable. At the annual banquet, end of season awards w e r given out and honors were mentioned. The season ended with a 9-16 record overall, and the Eagles broke many team records. Six new records were set and one was tied. The team posted 9 wins which tied the 1990 record . New records set this year include: 144 hits, 130 runs, 30 doubles, 7 triples, 11 home runs , and 1 I 3 stolen bases. The 1992 team awards went to Jason Bardsley as MVP, Jared Powell as Offensive Player of the Year, Judd Hawkins as Defensive Player of the Year, Todd Leonard earned Rookie of the Year, and Kelly Ne lson was voted Most Improved Player. Sectional T his year the Eagle volleyball team had higher expectations than what really came of the season. With a record almost identical as last year with 11 - 17-8 the Eagles did accomplish one of their many goals set at the very beginning of the season. The St. Albert Saintes were defeated by the soaring Eagles with scores of 15-12, 10-15, 14-16, 15- 17 , and 15-8. The most exciting match of the season was played at home in front of an ecstatic home crowd. With the match lasting 2 1/2 hours both teams became very exhausted. That was when the Eagles showed who the better team was by winning the last game 15-8. In that game the girls came away with 68 team kills , spread almost evenly amongst four starters . This year's volleyball team showed that the games they lost were close and the ones they won, they won big. Because usually if you out score all of your opponents by 15 points in a season you're usually way over ha lf or pretty darn close , so the credit goes to t he Eagl es. 38 Volleyball CHAMPS This year's award winners start way beck in the beginning of the season when Angie Widick and Kirsten Anderson both were elected to the All-Tourney team at the Underwood Tournament. Angie Widick was also elected 1st Team All-Conference, Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year, and All-Southwest Iowa Honorable Mention by the Daily Nonpareil. Leslie Casson wa s nam ed 2nd team All - Conferen ce and also MVP while sister Lory Casson w as named Honorabl e M ention . Kirsten Anderson was chosen Most Outstanding De fensive Player of th e Year , and Lisa Ettleman was named Rookie of the Year. D. his year's football team was 18 , most of the games that were played were against teams that were never seen before. Most of the games were lost by a touchdown or by a point . There were 9 seniors out this year, which is the most out in a while. Awards were given out on Nov. 17, 1992. Todd Leonard won the Tim Diller Offensive Lineman Award for the second year in a row. Valuable player for offensive was awarded to Judd Hawkins. Todd Leonard and Judd Hawkins also won most valuable player for defense. Most valuable players for special team went to Phil Kennedy and Judd Hawkins. First Team All District went to Judd Hawkins and Second Team All Distict went to Todd Leonard, both for defense. Honorable Mentions went to Phil Kennedy , Chad Ryan, Brad Christensen and Jay Collins. Congratulations to everyone that received awards. Coach McNamara Football 41 �Cross Country Takin' it to the Off Roads T he ' 92 Cross Country team started from scratch including the coach. This was Coach Girard's first year of coaching so the runners and the coach had to teach each other throughout the season. The team consisted of one senior and four sophomores . The lone senior was Shun -Bok Fong who was a newcomer to UHS. Bok ran pretty consistently and broke the school record in the Sk in a time of 16:51 . The team results were as follows: West Harrison - 4th , Carroll Kuemper -13th, Tri-Center - 1 1th, Shenandoah - 12th, Woodbine -12th , WIC 6th , MoValley - 12th, Treynor -3rd , and Districts - 19th. Coaches Lewie Curtis and Ke v in Hough gav e their time, patience, and expertise to lead their wrestlers into battle. There were a couple of newcome rs to the mat. Freshman Ryan Kingery, Sophomores Dan M asker and Brad Christensen, and Senior Todd Leonard . Two years of expe ri ence was provided by Se nior Phillip Kenne dy , and Juniors Tim Rodenburg and Cole Williams. The backbone of the team were the 4 time State Qualifier Chad Ryan and 3 time State Quali fi er Dean Leaders. Both ended th is years season and t heir high school wrestling career with a trip to Des Moines. Dean received a 3rd place finish. The wrestling team wou ld like to t hank all the fans, administ ration, facul ty, community members, and their parents for t heir con tinued support. Freshmen gave the team good, strong support and the veterans led the team with leadership and past experience. Two school records were broken this year and both of them were ran at our Conference meet at Treynor. First, the Shuttle Hurdle team consisting of Lory Casson, Ann Hough, Leslie Casson and Janet Ross ran a time of 1: 14. This was the first year that these girls ran together and a good job to all of them. Janet Ross was our second record breaker. She ran the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.56. Congratulations Janet!! We had a full team of sprinters and midd le distance. Jill Childs, Karen Hedegaard, Melisia Kaiser, Melissa Schmidt, Janet Ross, Erika Martin, Keri Strum, Andromeda Ross, Melanie Witt, Carla Wiggins, Shelly Christensen, and Sara Powell were are very powerful sprinters. Connie Casson, Lory Casson, Leslie Casson, Ann Hough, Shawna Barnett and Susie Knott were the long distance girls. Melanie Witt, Katy Richards, Andromeda Ross and Erika Martin were the throwers for the team. Many of the Eagles had great success this year. Many overcame sore muscles and overall tiredness to place as high as they could. There was one lone Eagle to break a record , which may very well stay there for a long time. That was Todd Leonard in the 1 I 0 high hurdles with a new record time of 16.08. There was also just one team member to move on to State. That on was Trent Leonard in the 110 high hurdles. There were many seniors on the track team showing their leadership and many of them will be missed. The Eagles had one really good meet at Gri swold where they were runner-ups. Fortyfour Seniors and three juniors graduated. Class colors were maroon and silver. The class flowe r was a red rose. Dan Knudtson served as class sponsor. To start the ceremony, the band played "Pomp and Circumstance, " followed later by "Through The Years. " The Choir then performed " Don 't Say Goodbye" and " In This Very Room. As we wandered through the halls of blue and orange a lot of memories were set into our minds. The class of '93 has seen a lot of changes in their time. We have seen many principals come and go and we were glad to see Mr. Dannen stick with us. We have also seen many teachers come and go all of which we formed some kind of bond with . Others changes being the changes of Homecoming '92 to the changes of Prom '93. Even though we thought they would be bad changes , they really didn't turn out all that bad. Throughout our high school years we have seen many teachers pull out their hair for us, we've seen many teachers sacrifice for us. We owe a lot to the faculty and administration for the years they gave us. They put a lot of hard work and dedication into this school and made it the best they possibly could. Their concern for our well-being was and is greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank the underclassmen for the great years they gave us. I'm sure you all know that some of us really enjoyed picking on you and getting away with it. Thanks for putting up with us and we really didn ' t mind you!! Also a great big THANK YOU to Ms. Elbert for making our last high school year book the best. Thanks for putting up with all of some peoples' stuff (I think you know what we're talking about!). We know that the majority of the class was seniors, but that goes without saying! The newspaper staff did a great job redesigning the paper , it looked great!
