Nine A Trip to Heaven (A Closs Prophecy for Closs of 1942) S-s-s--, boom, tinkle. And I felt myself being hurled rapid! through space. I should hove known better than to appear in Miss Graber's English class without my assignment reod.y. I tried to catch hold of a cloud as I went by. Then I clutched at the moon, the planet Mercury, and the Milky Woy, but without avail. On I sped into Eternity. Then I stood before the Golden Gate . Saint Peter began to ask me questions a bout my innumerable post sins but any one with expe rience in giving excuses for things undone at Underwood High School has nothing to fear from a mere Saint I hod no trouble at all in persuading the old gentleman that I was more of a saint than he was, although Miss Olden and Mr. Dunlavy would quickly hove seen through my line of explanations. Saint Peter handed mo a slide trombone, explaining that they were all out of harps in Heaven, swung open the Golden Gate and there I was in Paradise . The first matter that caught my attention was a number of little cherubs se lling newspapers. I listened to the ir cries and this is what I heard : "Extra! Principal of Underwood High School is very sick! Grieving over loss of brightest boy in senior cla ss!" About this time I began to sprout wings, but I was aroused from this discovery by anothe r cry. "Extra! Extra! Principal Middleton hos died and gone to Heaven!" So I returned to the Golden Gate and stood on hour waiting . But nobody showed up. Finally there was on increase of shouting from the heavenly newsboys. "Extra! Extra! Principal Middleton does not show up at Heaven ." Wondering about Heaven several hours later I come upon a lot of angels looking through telescopes, and having a grand time laughing at what they sow. I procured a telescope, adjusted it, and there before my vision was the good earth, the town of Underwood and all my friends of Underwood High School. The sight was a little blurred so I twisted the adjustments, and beho ld there was the earth again in the year of 1970. W ell, well, I thought, here is a chance to see what my old friends ore up to. Usi ng my new immortal power, I ordered my telescope to focus itself. Sure enough, across the Atlantic it went. Across Ital y, Greece, and into Turkey. The City of Constantinople loomed up before my gaze, the palace of the Sulton . Yes, here was the inner Court of the Sul ton's harem-and-soy! Could it possibly be true . Sitting in majesty upon a throne, receiving the plaudits of the other ladies of the harem was none other than our own Donna Herrill. "Great work, ol d telescope," I said. " Now show me some of the other girls." It hesitated and wavered for a moment, then bock it streaked to the old home town ond up to a house with o sign in front of it "Old Ladies Home," and the re, sitting comfortably in the front room ploying checkers were Verle Herrick and Mary Killion, ond Betty Anderson wa s sitting watching them ove r her knitting. Poor girls, I always thought they hod better things in store for them than this. But on rushed my te lescope . North we scurried over Canada, and up to cold frigid Alaska. Here we Ten stopped before on Esk imo Igloo. The father of the family was away but ploying around the Igloo entrance were fourteen little Esk imo children. I soy Eskimo children yet they hod a look about them that was familiar. And almost at once I knew why, for there issued from the e ntrance the mother, considerably more plump than when I knew her lost, but sti ll the some old Pat Kenealy. She always hod to be at the top o f everything and here she was at lo st " sitt ing on top of the world." My telescope was impati en t so I let it go on. Bock to New York City, and right into a ladi es' athl etic club. Before I could halt it we were inside the Turk ish both. There, with only their heads protruding from the tops of steam boxes, each with three chins but reconizobl e yet were Maxine Dose and Maxine Ellis. Just as I thought I I knew when I was bock home that if those two girls didn't stop getting so much candy from their various boy fri ends they would e nd up like this. And then my te lescope took a short swing . He re we were at the Fo lli es, my how those gi rls could dance ! And right in the middle of the line, stepping o s peppy as any o f the rest of them, were Doralee Klopping and Rosemary Osborn. Those gi rls must be nearly fifty yea rs o ld by this time but you wouldn ' t know it to see them. Make-up con do marvelous things in cove ring a girl's age! And then right boc k to Underwood High School. How natural it looked. Nothing seemed changed o bit. But who do you suppose was scrubbing the corridor floors wearing a cop label ed Assistant Joni tress! It was N~rma Benson. You'd wonder pe rhaps how she would make use o f her store of Geome try and Algebra on a job like this. Neverthel ess, he re she was. We often wonder what happened to Virginia Hemmingson. My te lescope turned to Russia where she is doing post-war nursing. I then focused my te lescope on one o f Virginia 's best friend s, Shirley Ballard who is to be noted o s one of Hollywood's best hoir stylists and make up artists. All th rs time I was wondering whot hod become o f the boys of the class, but even on immortal telescope cou ld not reveal to me more than one scene at a time. Now I hod to restrain myself no longer. Off we went. Chicago wos our first stop. The build ing which e ntered our vision was ve ry modern and prosperous look.ing.. Over the main entrance hung a sign. "Orgoniz~d Rockets of Ame rica. " The telescope pi e rced t ~ building, showed me t~,e general o ffi ce and p~us~­ before a door marked, Special Deportment for ,, oo A ing Children's Ban ks, Ed Nelson, Chi e f oote,~; littl e cord hanging from the door now sa id, Away on firm business." Wi thout waiting any longer I ordered my ro phecyii~? te lescope to be on its way . He re 1s what we faun It Rov Handke driving a ga rbage coll ecting tru ~k . If _ must have bee n his Scotch ancestry showing 1tse getting something for nothing. Playing in a Salvation 1, Army Band, we found John Costor. His better nature overcame him in the end. President of the clerk Republic of Santa Domingo, we discovered to be Horold Esington, sitting in a palace surrounded by machine guns. Harold always said he would be president some day. Lastly we came to Ed Tolbott, manager of Gun-boat Flynn, the contender far the heavyweight championship of the United States. Leave it to Ed to be around if there was going to be a fight! With this my telescope turned to the main office of the Treasury building where we find Merle Russell stumbling over one of his old school favorites-a ten column working sheet. The next twist was to Madison Square Garden where whom should we find to our amazement but Bill Huneke, All Star hockey player. His school basketball proved to be very helpful in his hockey playing. The next stop on the class of 1942 we find the happiest couple in the world D. L. Lowden and Zella Mathias. It seems they were married after graduation. D. L. joined the navy, Zella fallowed him to South America where they live in a bamboo hut with their large family of sunburned children. The last stop was at the Stork Club in Hollywood. There we find Bob Hansen leading his famous dance band and doing quite a bit of trombone soloing him- self. And then my alarm clock rang. Alarm cloc k in Heaven! Certainly not. I awoke groggily and looked at the clock. Five thirty in the morning . I loo ked at the calendar, April 30, 1942. Oh yes! I had set the alarm in order to wake up in time to write that theme for Miss Graber's Engl ish class. My trip to Heaven was all a dream. Perhaps my classmates aren't going to wind up in harems, igloos, rackets, and garbage collecting. Who knows? One dropped out and no new students came in. After we were initiated by the seniors, we were determined to accomplish a s much as possi ble during ou r four years. We had severa l parties following this, among them a weiner roast Christmas party, and a Valentine party. Our 'room had a basketba ll learn coached by Mr. Dunlavy and we played several games with other towns. We we re able to win most of our games. W e put on the play " Pardon Me" for the April P.T.A. meeting. Our class carried on a "Setler English Campaign". W e also signed the Consumer's Victory Pledge and sent it to the School and Co llege Staff in Washington. FIFTH AND SIXTH The pupils in our room were organized into three different g roups-Room Monitors, library Board, and Playground Commiltee. We a lte rnated on the committees duri ng t he year serving one third of the year on each one. Our class enjoyed the Halloween, Christmas and Va lentine parties given throughout the yea r. THIRD AND FOURTH The patriotic third and fourth grades are saving paper for defense and keeping a chart of defense stamps bought. Our room has done some soap carving and assisted with the program for the Bingo Party. PRIMARY We celebrated by having a party on the following holidays: Halloween Christmas and Valentines day. In the fa ll we made a postoffice and took turns being postmaster. An indoor garden was also started by planting beans, grass, corn, and apple seeds. We watched them grow. We kept snails and goldfish Sixteen and watched grasshoppers hatch. F. A. The F.F.A. is the busi ness and soc ial organization of the boys enrol led in Vocational Agriculture. They believe in mix ing plea sure with business and hove gone qu ite a ways in accomplishing this purpose. From the proceeds of ope rating a 30-ocre form, sel ling candy during noon hours, and mi xing livestock mine ra l, nineteen members spent six days and traveled nine hund red e ighty mil es. All expenses paid. On Monday August l l, nineteen membe rs hired Louis Ring with his truck. They loaded in blankets, potatoes, eggs a nd beans and started out for ports unknown. That night they comped east of K C. in the rain. The next two nights they comped on the lake of th e Ozarks. From there they tra ve led north to Hann ibal Mo. up the Mississippi R. to Keokuk and home ogai~ through southe rn Iowa. They arrived home Saturday noon, a tired bunch but determined to work hard - e r and tra vel farther next year. On the night of Morch 27 they rented the McCl e lland hall and the members enterta ined their g irl friends at a rol le r ska ting party. Twenty-seven Senior Skip Day -- The senior class, accompanied by their sponsor, Mr. Dunlavy and Mrs. Dunlavy, went to Lincoln on April 16, for their skip day. Five o'clock was the starting time of th is group. They began their tour by driving th rough Boys Town, a little way from Omaha . They visited many interesting pla ces. First wa s the State Capitol. Then they went to the Uni versity of Nebraska . After that they went to the Lincoln Airplane and Flying School. At noon the group we nt to the Chambe r of Commerce buildi ng and a te lunch. Ente rta inment wa s prov ided duri ng the meal. Next they visited the City Police Sta tion a nd Fire Station. These we re both ve ry inte resting. Then they went to the Ante lope Pork Zoo, whi ch wa s a bea uti - ful place. From the re they went to the Cadwa ll ader Fur Company. The Ideal Bottli ng Compa ny was visi ted next. The Li nco ln Pa rking Compa ny was the la st place they visited. Ph.oto by Darklne Rowe • ., 2 Friday, September 10, 1999 The Flooa of '99 The Daily Nonpareil Photos tell story of record rain It rained intermittently all day on Friday, Aug. 6. By early Saturday morn- ing, the rainfall turned into a deluge and obliterated a record that had stood for nearly a century in southwest Iowa. The storm tha t hit Council Bluffs and the surrounding area was an historic and memorable one. In a span of less than 24 hours, it dumped an official measurement of 10.48 inch- es of rain on the area, break- ing the record set in 1903. Area residents awoke to find a mess left in Mother Nature's path. Streets and intersections were flooded, retaining walls were washed away, bridges were damaged, cars were seen floating down city streets, basement walls collapsed, parks were under water, sewers backed up and, in some instances, peo- ple were forced from their homes. Many residents saw a lifetime of memories washed away by the flooding. But such storms can also bring out the best in people. By mid-morning Satur- . day, residents were helping their neighbors clean up after the storm. Cleanup efforts for some were com- pleted in a few days. Others are still strug- gling as they try to return their families' lives and living quarters to pre-flood status. "I've never seen it this bad," said Council Bluffs Mayor Thomas Hanafan shortly after the rains ended. • He had taken office just months before a series of tornadoes devastated the west side of the city in 1988. Extra firefighters and police officers answered the call to help deal with the emergency situation. Red Cross and Salvation Army personnel and volunteers immediately mobilized. A disaster declaration brought federal and state officials into the area to help assess damage and offer assistance. As the mayor noted, there is no way to adequate- ly prepare for this type of situation. Area residents will long remember and want their children to remember the record-breaking storm. Thanks to the pho- tographs ·submitted by Nonpareil readers, this spe- cial section will help capture and preserve those special events.
