The city contracted last fall with Havelone Construction Company for removal of the diseased or dead trees and a new contract for removal of more trees will probably be advertised this week, according to Dale Mills, public works director. A new count of dead trees on city parking should be ready by Tuesday. At Lincoln Avenue and Pierce Street last week, Havelone Construction temporarily blocked traffic while sawing down a tree measuring 40 inches in diameter and 90 feet tall. How happy I am that I have been asked to speak to you on the opening page of your yearbook! Perhaps you do not recognize me, although I have always been with you; in fact, I permeate every phase of your school life. I belong to every organization and am a vital part of every successful activity. I am the force that "puts over" the magazine-sales campaign, the reason behind good citizenship, the desire to make our school "tops" in anything we undertake. I have been present at every game where I seem to find myself more at home than anywhere else. Yes, school activities help to build me strong. It must be developed and formed, like any good habit, by conscious effort and practice on the part of each individual. Busy leading, guiding and teaching are all members of the Underwood faculty. Each responsibility requires much time and patience. Energetic and helpful as club sponsors, supervisors of class projects, directors of plays, band, and athletic programs, and chaperones on trips and at parties, our teachers set examples of good school spirit. As principal, Miss Minnie E. Taylor writes, signs a nd fil e s several hundre d admit slips each y ear-a small item in the ke eping of high school records. · Othe r duties which challenge and interest her are teaching socia l science, sponsoring the senior class and the pep club and acting as adviser to student cabinet and the yea rbook staff. Our photographe r interrupte d regular band practice to ge t this inte resting picture of Mr. Esancy as he practiced with a small instrumenta l group composed of Fred Pete rson, Donna Christoffe rsen, Marilyn Rodenburg, and Ilene Ravlin. Mr. Esancy also teaches some social science classes, directs chorus, and the junior high band. -5- I Mrs. Lena Doller heads a successful home economics program in our school. His refusal to permit his daughter and Joe Lanconi to marry brmgs Luigi, Joe 's father, to plead his case. · In a state of exhaustion Phillip falls asleep, dreaming that he dies. He sees life go on in the Morlock family as if nothing had happened. He continues to argue with Luigi's ghost. Then Lucifer is sent to round Up his soul for "down under." Betty Charles • SENIOR SKIP DAY The zero hour for Underwood's annual senior skip day came at 6:45 on the morning of April 19, when twenty-two seniors, accompanied by Miss Taylor, left Council Bluffs on a chartered bus headed for Lincoln . · The first stop occurred at Gretna , Nebraska, where p ancakes, ham, bacon and eggs were consumed by a very hungry bunch. Upon arriving in Lincoln, Morrill Hall was visited, where many stuffed animals and aged fossils were seen. At the state Capitol the seniors were lucky enough to see Nebraska's unicameral legislature engage in a lively debate. After investigating the Capitol from top to bottom, the class a te dinner at Gold's Cafeteria. The next stop was the penitentiary and w hile there, much was learned about prisoners and prison life. After touring Lincoln in the bus for about a half hour, the Lincoln Zoo, Police Department and Fire Department were visited . While a t the fire department, an actual alarm went out and the seniors saw a first hand demonstration of what happens when a fire starts. At 5:30 the students split up and went shopping and ate supper. They were given an hour in which to be on their own. After all w ere back toge ther, the movie "Pony Express" was enjoyed. When the show was over, we clambered back into 0 u r bus and were safely back in Council Bluffs by 11 :00. EVIDENCE OF PROGRESS Thirty-one seniors received the most coveted possession of a high school student Thursday evening, May 21st, when Mr. L. P. Brewer, President of the Board of Education, presented them with diplomas. Dr. Gerold Bisbee minister at Broadway Methodist Church in Council BluHs, delivered the Comm~ncement address, "Facing the Challenge of Tomorrow." The topic of Dr. F. C. Aldrich's speech, which was given at the Baccalaureate service Sunday, May 17th, was "Today's Challenge." Dr. Aldrich is the Hazel Dell Methodist minister and a former missionary to India. The high school band furnished appropriate music for the corona tion ceremony, which was followed by a dance. -24- AN IMPETUS TO SCHOOL SPIRIT Reigning over the annual Homecoming activities on November 13, 1952, were Queen June Manhart and King Gary W ahle. Senior attendants were Shirley Bonnes and Bob Brokman. Donna ChristoHersen and Arthur Larsen served as junior attendants. Crownbearers were Brenda Bertelsen and Terry Harms. Gloria Brown carried the queen's bouquet. Master of the coronation ceremonies was Supt. T. E. Knowlton, who revealed the identity of the royalty to many interested friends and relatives and presented the king and queen with loving cups. FUN AND FELLOWSHIP Keeping in mind their purpose of helping to build a better tomorrow, the Underwood F.H.A. girls decided to send a Christmas box of new school supplies to an underprivileged Negro school in Mississippi. By contributing to this school, the girls felt they were furthering the cause of Christian fellowship a nd the appreciation of peoples of other races. The annual Spinster's Spree was an event of Friday, March 13th. The boys were guests at a party built around a theme of superstition. Games, dancing, and e lection of the most eligible bachelor, and refreshments provided a full evening of fun. F.H.A. week was held in April b eginning with group a ttendance a t the Underwood Luthe ran Church. To foster school spirit, promote good sportsmanship, and serve our school a t all times are purposes which the club more than fulfilled . The peppy• ye lls, splendid school spirit and rea l sportsmanship displayed by the girls broug ht much favorable comment from community basketball fans. Last spring the track team compe ted in five meets. W e entered in the mile . 880 dash, 440, dash, 220 dash, 100 dash, the football throw, broad jump, shot put. and 440, 880 and mile relays. Beginning her day you might find he r taking roll, making out absence slips, and after a busy day of carrying out her role as principal, you'll see her dismissing the students at 3:35. But her day doesn' t end there for there are always papers to check, records to keep, and many varied activities to a ttend. Knowlton for guidance :n charting our courses in the future. Mr. Knowlton lives in Underwood and has s erved as s upe rintendent here for fifteen ye ars. His days are filled with varied activities and responsibilities, but he finds time on weeken . and vacations to h unt and fish. While raising three of his own children, he ha s had a part in the lives of fourteen graduating classes at Underwood, which is quite a record. Receiving his M.A. a t the University of South Dakota, he taught in four South Dakota schools before coming to Iowa. She might be referred to as " Canis-Major" because of her main hobby- dog training. Mrs. Frazer resides in Council Bluffs with her husband, son, and three daughters. She received her B. A. degree from Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa. "Ursa Major", another bright star, doesn't outshine Mr. Jack DeSelms. In his first year at Underwood, Mr. DeSelms has cast quite a ligh t in the pschology, business law, and industri al arts departments. Although he enjoys s wimming, basketball, and baseball, Mr. DeSelms spends most of his spare time with his son Bradley Curtis. He received his B. A. from Northwest · Missouri State Teachers' College. Another " Supergiant" in his field, Mr. Gary Wheeler ccm be likened to the great star " Rigle" . His first year at Underwood was busily fill ed with teachin g senior band, junior band , and private lessons to grade and high school students. He certainly must have found many opportunities to engage in his main hobby of listening to good music. From his home town, P eterson , Iowa, Mr. Wheeler went to Wayne State Teachers' College where he obtained his Bachelor of Music Education. Just as " Cassopeia" rules the heavens, Miss Helen Murphy rules wisely over the mathematics and Latin departments. During her four years here at Underwood, she has had many opportunities to hear her pet peeve, "I didn't get my pro blems finished." Miss Murphy received her B.A. from P arsons College. At her home in Omaha she finds time to work at he r hobbies, sewing and puzzles. Mr. Clarence Boos inevitably came into contact with " Scorpius " this year. He ha s taught biology, chemistry, and eighth grade s cience for two years at Underwood. Mr. Boos was educated at Simpson whe re he received a B. A., and he is now working on his Masters Degree at Omaha U. He resides with his wife and two children near Weston. "He rcule s " ha s nothing over Mr. Roger Russell. Not only is he a giant in si ze, bu t also in intellect. World history, general science, and e conomic s were aptly handl ed by Mr. Russell, this year which was his first year a t U.H.S. His home town is Peru, Nebras ka , whe re he attended Ne braska Sta te Teachers' College. He has a B.S. in S duca tion. - 6- Mr. Russell Solberg is a s grea t a hunte r, in his field, as " Orion" is. One of his duties is to hunt out and develop the potential in possi ble athle tes. " Numbers " pl ay an important part in his teaching: The number of points in a basketball game , the number of errors in a typing test, the numbers in bookkeeping, not to mention the number of accidents on the highway dis cussed in drivers education class. Formerly teachin g in Nebraska, he did obtain part of his s chooling a t Wayne Sta te Teache rs' College, where he received his B. A. in 1956. Mr. Melvin Rogers might be known as " Betelgeuse" for he is certainly a " Supergiant" , not in si ze, but in his coaching and teaching c ap acities. Mr. Rogers' third year at Underwood is occupied with freshman an d sophomore English, physical education, track, and he is assistant baske tball coach. F rom his home town, Craig, Nebraska, he went to Dana College where he received his B.S. and then to Omaha U. whe re he received his M.S. Mr. Dare! Pennington has cast as bright a li gh t here as " Canopus " has in the heavens. His ma jor duty is teaching Junior and Senior English, although sponsoring "The Log", directing the Junior and Senior Class P l ays, and being in charge of the library are certainly not minor in any means. The Seniors' scholastic "Count down" began in 1948 when eleven shy kindergartners started school here at Underwood. The next milestone came with count "four" entering high school. Fifty-one green "Freshies" were initiated in U.H.S. in 1958. Now the final count is being witnessed by thirty-five seasoned Seniors. Seven of the original eleven have endured the test thus far. During counts "four", "three", "two," and "one" (their high school years) the Seniors have learned that scholastic courses plus extra-curricular activities constitute a well-rounded education which is essential in preparing for the future. Almost everyone has participated in some extra-curricular activity, and twelve experienced some leadership training by serving as officers in different organizations. Two boys and seven girls on the honor roll are proof that the scholastic courses have not been neglected. The "zero hour" is approaching when the Seniors will blast off into the future, but they are confident and well prepared to meet any obstacles. This year, the third step, countless new responsibilities and experiences have been encountered. Courses in American His tory, En glish , geometry, chemistry, typing, bookkeeping, and Latin II were met and conquered. As the Juniors found out, the top two steps in the stairs, used only by upperclassmen, are truly golden. From the third step countless wonders were revealed. This class ranked highest in an intelligence test taken in our high school this year. As the expedition go t under way, they encountered such galaxies as business arithmetic, driver education, geometry, worl d history, English, Latin, shop, and biology, About seven of the students left their names in the Milky Way, or honor roll , each six weeks. For a little recreation we s topped at Cassiopeia' s Court. During their trip this year they have met many problems and taken various orbits. Having already reached one-fourth of their goal, the Freshmen reali ze that they should work and keep trying these few short years to prepare themselves for this modern age in which we are all living. Maybe a saying s uch as, "Prepare yourself, it's later than you think", would help some of us. After a rigid entrance test called "Initiation", the Freshm'en felt officially accepted into high school. They then turned interjectically to English, Latin, homemaking, industrial arts, general math, science, and algebra. They dominated the honor roll each six weeks with approximately fourteen students each time. But the F reshmen are firm believers that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Their first semester party consisted of a dance centering around Yuletide decorations and Christmas cheer. Torneten's timber was the scene for their second semester party. All their activities, fun, and homework kept them occupied most of the time, therefore, leaving the space age worries up to Uncle Sam. The cross-country team shortened its running time last fall and as a result won five track meets - which is quite a record. Members of the team are: Ronald Hough, Larry Bargenquast, Kenny Cohrs, Donald Hough, and Kirk McManamy. The track team traveled far to attend the track meets and each time the trip proved profitable. September 25 found the boys attending the Class B State Mile Team Race at Iowa City. Lakeview was the site of the Black Hawk Invitational Meet held in October. • Lit the c;Qace Just as a criminal returns to the scene of the crime, our track team re turned to the scene of a victory. The place was Iowa City for the Class B Cross Country Meet. Two words from Coach Rogers sums up his opinion of the team, "very successful". Just as one might suspect, he is looking forward to a "very successful" spring track season. Lettermen returning from last year's county championship team include: Ron Hough, distance; Larry Bargenquast, shot put and distance; Phillip Nelson, sprints and li:urdles; Kenny Cohrs, distance; Ernie Niemann, pole vault; Tim Christensen, sprints; Donnie Hough, distance; and Dick Churchill , sprints. "Cf'ep etub Cf'rouide" the ~eedea Spark" "Our boys will shine tonight, our boys will shine" was frequently heard throughout the year signifying another victory. And the team did shine brightly this year- as brightly as any star in the heavens. Each of the sixty four members of the Pep Club can feel that she may have helped the star shine a little brighter. By attending every game and joining in with enthusiastic cheers and peppy songs, the Pep Club gave loyal support to the team. Just as a spaceman changes his space - suit when it becomes obsolete, the Pep Club changed its outfits this year. The out-dated uniforms were exchanged for snappy blue wool pleated skirts and white sweaters. A large white megaphone was also bought for the games. The evening commenced with a pair of thrilling basketball games with Carson-Macedonia from which Underwood emerged the victor both times, Following the games the marching band gave a delightful performance of /1 Junior Joins the Band", & a series oi precision maneuvers accompanied by novel music. As the band swung into the traditional 11 Alm a Mat er'', the royal court appeared. A large and enthusiastic crowd viewed: first ~oval eourt the crown bearers, Lena Jen son and Bruce Fellers: Nex t the cup bearer, Mark Hartwell, and the flower girl, Evelyn Newland. As the tension moun ted the Junior attendants, Marjorie Herrill and Doran Christensen entered , follo wed by Senior attendants, Judy Dose and Phillip NAlson. P revious speculation was confirmed when Ellen Herrill and Larry Bargenquast appeared to be officially crowned King and Cueen of the 1960 Homecoming by Superintendent Knowlton. The three-act comedy emphasi zed a situa tion found in many homes today - the struggle to get the entire family together for an evening of family fun. The pl ay cen tered around the Mille r Family: Fred, Martha and their two children, Doris and George. In a high school physiology class the students had been discussing problems of the home and parents. George, an exceptionally bright pupil, was invited to be on a radio discussion panel. The subject was /1 Are Parents People?" Becoming interested in the problem faced in modem homes, George discussed the problems of the Miller family with his parents. Thus it was decided to have an evening in which the family was to stay home and enjoy becoming together once again. The evening did not turn out as George ha~ planned, and many amusing incidents resulted. Thirteen students took an active part in the play under the direction of Mr. Darel Pennington. Also, to fo ster better studen t-teacher understanding. The projects for this year were many and varied, They include sponsoring two sockhops and running the concession stand at a bas ke tball game. One of the chief duties is s upervising the e lection of cheerleade rs and participants in Homecoming. Also, purchasing engraved loving cups fo r th e King and Cueen. Injec ting Christmas spirit in to the s chool was accomplished by an assembly consis ting of acts presented by various s tudents. Open house was another of the activities. Members posed as guides to acquaint parents with the school program and the teache rs. Mr. Russell As everyone knows, there are certain rules that are necessary whether you are here on earth or on the moon. Most girls agree that "charm" is one of these, so this year's program for the Underwood Homemaker's of Tomorrow was a course in charm conducted by Mrs. Bess Barnes. During the year, the 50 members learned the techniques of walking sitting, and standing correctly; make-up and hair-styling. Mrs. Barnes emph asized that your personality is reflected in whatever you do - whether it be walking, talking, or just plain smiling. Since everyone's different no one rule c an be given in charm that will benefit all. Each girl experimented on herself until she found the right hair style and make-up; she then learned how much to use and how to apply it. The cours e was concluded with a review given for the parents in which the girls, themselves, performed the various topics that they had been instructed in. The year was s upplemented by a candlelight install a tion service for the new officers, taking part in the Christmas program for the high school, and selling at a basketball game. This year, their second year in existence, the boys' gl ee, girls' glee, and mixed chorus made notable improvement. Mr. Davis believes that practice leads to perfection so the vocal calendar was crammed full. On October 22 a mixed quartet entered All-State tryouts at Shenandoah and were picked to attend the All-State vocal concert a t Des Moines, November 25 and 26. December 11 found all vocal students who were inte rested journeying to Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne, Nebraska, to hear the " Messiah". The next evening the mixed chorus sang Christmas Carols in Council Bluffs as a part of a ceremony to open the Christmas shopping season. The annual Christmas Concert was given by the vocal and instrumental departments on December 21. The three Choruses presen ted their numbers before a setting of stained glass windows. March was occupied with preparation for the Quad County Chorus at Harlan and the small group contest held April 7 and 8. Also, on April 22, there was a large group contest. Besides participating in these events, some small groups gained practice by singing at P . T.A. meetings, before Church organizations, Women's Clubs, and the assembly, at the Junior-Senior Banquet, and for Bacculaureate, and Commencement. - 39- "Zekiel Saw Da Wheel " is practiced for concert". This is also true in l aun ching a successful band. Each member must first be taught the fundamentals of music; then he must learn to blend with the other instruments in tone quality, pitch, intonation , an d bal ance. But, the success of the group rests upon the instructor. It is he who molds all the individuals into an effe ctive group. Every instructor has . his own methods of directing so when a new band instructor comes, everyone must be re-educated. The entire operation takes time , co-operation, desire, and plenty of practice. This year's forty-one members, unde r the direction of Mr. Wheeler, parti cipated in the Hoo-Doo-Days' Parade at Neola , and the State Marching Contest, in which a III ra ting wa s received. The ban d ended its marchin g season by performi ng at the Home coming festivities. The conr.ert band s eas on was occupied with u Christmas Concert, uad-Coun ty F estival, a Spring concert, and State Concert Ban d Con test. Besides these events a numbe r of members participated in the State Solo and Ensembl e Contest. Beginning her day you might find he r taking roll, making out absence slips, and after a busy day of carrying out her role as principal, you'll see her dismissing the students at 3:35. But her day doesn' t end there for there are always papers to check, records to keep, and many varied activities to a ttend. Knowlton for guidance :n charting our courses in the future. Mr. Knowlton lives in Underwood and has s erved as s upe rintendent here for fifteen ye ars. His days are filled with varied activities and responsibilities, but he finds time on weeken . and vacations to h unt and fish. While raising three of his own children, he ha s had a part in the lives of fourteen graduating classes at Underwood, which is quite a record. Receiving his M.A. a t the University of South Dakota, he taught in four South Dakota schools before coming to Iowa. Certifi cate. -4- &ble ':f eacherd Cf'roCJiae a ~ood &tmodphere Homemaking, office training, general business, and eighth grade English were capably taught by Mrs. Wayne Frazer who is also sponsor of the Unde rwood Homemakers of Tomorrow and of the Junior-Senior banquet. She might be referred to as " Canis-Major" because of her main hobby- dog training. Mrs. Frazer resides in Council Bluffs with her husband, son, and three daughters. She received her B. A. degree from Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa. "Ursa Major", another bright star, doesn't outshine Mr. Jack DeSelms. In his first year at Underwood, Mr. DeSelms has cast quite a ligh t in the pschology, business law, and industri al arts departments. Although he enjoys s wimming, basketball, and baseball, Mr. DeSelms spends most of his spare time with his son Bradley Curtis. He received his B. A. from Northwest · Missouri State Teachers' College. Another " Supergiant" in his field, Mr. Gary Wheeler ccm be likened to the great star " Rigle" . His first year at Underwood was busily fill ed with teachin g senior band, junior band , and private lessons to grade and high school students. He certainly must have found many opportunities to engage in his main hobby of listening to good music. From his home town, P eterson , Iowa, Mr. Wheeler went to Wayne State Teachers' College where he obtained his Bachelor of Music Education. Just as " Cassopeia" rules the heavens, Miss Helen Murphy rules wisely over the mathematics and Latin departments. During her four years here at Underwood, she has had many opportunities to hear her pet peeve, "I didn't get my pro blems finished." Miss Murphy received her B.A. from P arsons College. At her home in Omaha she finds time to work at he r hobbies, sewing and puzzles. Mr. Clarence Boos inevitably came into contact with " Scorpius " this year. He ha s taught biology, chemistry, and eighth grade s cience for two years at Underwood. Mr. Boos was educated at Simpson whe re he received a B. A., and he is now working on his Masters Degree at Omaha U. He resides with his wife and two children near Weston. "He rcule s " ha s nothing over Mr. Roger Russell. Not only is he a giant in si ze, bu t also in intellect. World history, general science, and e conomic s were aptly handl ed by Mr. Russell, this year which was his first year a t U.H.S. One of his duties is to hunt out and develop the potential in possi ble athle tes. " Numbers " pl ay an important part in his teaching: The number of points in a basketball game , the number of errors in a typing test, the numbers in bookkeeping, not to mention the number of accidents on the highway dis cussed in drivers education class. Formerly teachin g in Nebraska, he did obtain part of his s chooling a t Wayne Sta te Teache rs' College, where he received his B. A. in 1956. Mr. Melvin Rogers might be known as " Betelgeuse" for he is certainly a " Supergiant" , not in si ze, but in his coaching and teaching c ap acities. Mr. Rogers' third year at Underwood is occupied with freshman an d sophomore English, physical education, track, and he is assistant baske tball coach. The Seniors' scholastic "Count down" began in 1948 when eleven shy kindergartners started school here at Underwood. The next milestone came with count "four" entering high school. Fifty-one green "Freshies" were initiated in U.H.S. in 1958. Now the final count is being witnessed by thirty-five seasoned Seniors. Seven of the original eleven have endured the test thus far. During counts "four", "three", "two," and "one" (their high school years) the Seniors have learned that scholastic courses plus extra-curricular activities constitute a well-rounded education which is essential in preparing for the future. Almost everyone has participated in some extra-curricular activity, and twelve experienced some leadership training by serving as officers in different organizations. Two boys and seven girls on the honor roll are proof that the scholastic courses have not been neglected. The "zero hour" is approaching when the Seniors will blast off into the future, but they are confident and well prepared to meet any obstacles. This class ranked highest in an intelligence test taken in our high school this year. As the expedition go t under way, they encountered such galaxies as business arithmetic, driver education, geometry, worl d history, English, Latin, shop, and biology, About seven of the students left their names in the Milky Way, or honor roll , each six weeks. For a little recreation we s topped at Cassiopeia' s Court. Having already reached one-fourth of their goal, the Freshmen reali ze that they should work and keep trying these few short years to prepare themselves for this modern age in which we are all living. Maybe a saying s uch as, "Prepare yourself, it's later than you think", would help some of us. After a rigid entrance test called "Initiation", the Freshm'en felt officially accepted into high school. They then turned interjectically to English, Latin, homemaking, industrial arts, general math, science, and algebra. They dominated the honor roll each six weeks with approximately fourteen students each time. But the F reshmen are firm believers that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Their first semester party consisted of a dance centering around Yuletide decorations and Christmas cheer. Torneten's timber was the scene for their second semester party. All their activities, fun, and homework kept them occupied most of the time, therefore, leaving the space age worries up to Uncle Sam. The cross-country team shortened its running time last fall and as a result won five track meets - which is quite a record. Members of the team are: Ronald Hough, Larry Bargenquast, Kenny Cohrs, Donald Hough, and Kirk McManamy. The track team traveled far to attend the track meets and each time the trip proved profitable. September 25 found the boys attending the Class B State Mile Team Race at Iowa City. Lakeview was the site of the Black Hawk Invitational Meet held in October. • Lit the c;Qace Just as a criminal returns to the scene of the crime, our track team re turned to the scene of a victory. The place was Iowa City for the Class B Cross Country Meet. Two words from Coach Rogers sums up his opinion of the team, "very successful". Just as one might suspect, he is looking forward to a "very successful" spring track season. Lettermen returning from last year's county championship team include: Ron Hough, distance; Larry Bargenquast, shot put and distance; Phillip Nelson, sprints and li:urdles; Kenny Cohrs, distance; Ernie Niemann, pole vault; Tim Christensen, sprints; Donnie Hough, distance; and Dick Churchill , sprints. By attending every game and joining in with enthusiastic cheers and peppy songs, the Pep Club gave loyal support to the team. The evening commenced with a pair of thrilling basketball games with Carson-Macedonia from which Underwood emerged the victor both times, Following the games the marching band gave a delightful performance of /1 Junior Joins the Band", & a series oi precision maneuvers accompanied by novel music. P revious speculation was confirmed when Ellen Herrill and Larry Bargenquast appeared to be officially crowned King and Cueen of the 1960 Homecoming by Superintendent Knowlton. The three-act comedy emphasi zed a situa tion found in many homes today - the struggle to get the entire family together for an evening of family fun. The pl ay cen tered around the Mille r Family: Fred, Martha and their two children, Doris and George. In a high school physiology class the students had been discussing problems of the home and parents. George, an exceptionally bright pupil, was invited to be on a radio discussion panel. The subject was /1 Are Parents People?" Becoming interested in the problem faced in modem homes, George discussed the problems of the Miller family with his parents. Thus it was decided to have an evening in which the family was to stay home and enjoy becoming together once again. The evening did not turn out as George ha~ planned, and many amusing incidents resulted. Thirteen students took an active part in the play under the direction of Mr. Darel Pennington. Mr. Russell As everyone knows, there are certain rules that are necessary whether you are here on earth or on the moon. Most girls agree that "charm" is one of these, so this year's program for the Underwood Homemaker's of Tomorrow was a course in charm conducted by Mrs. Bess Barnes. During the year, the 50 members learned the techniques of walking sitting, and standing correctly; make-up and hair-styling. Mrs. Barnes emph asized that your personality is reflected in whatever you do - whether it be walking, talking, or just plain smiling. Since everyone's different no one rule c an be given in charm that will benefit all. Each girl experimented on herself until she found the right hair style and make-up; she then learned how much to use and how to apply it. The cours e was concluded with a review given for the parents in which the girls, themselves, performed the various topics that they had been instructed in. The year was s upplemented by a candlelight install a tion service for the new officers, taking part in the Christmas program for the high school, and selling at a basketball game. This year, their second year in existence, the boys' gl ee, girls' glee, and mixed chorus made notable improvement. Mr. Davis believes that practice leads to perfection so the vocal calendar was crammed full. On October 22 a mixed quartet entered All-State tryouts at Shenandoah and were picked to attend the All-State vocal concert a t Des Moines, November 25 and 26. December 11 found all vocal students who were inte rested journeying to Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne, Nebraska, to hear the " Messiah". The next evening the mixed chorus sang Christmas Carols in Council Bluffs as a part of a ceremony to open the Christmas shopping season. The annual Christmas Concert was given by the vocal and instrumental departments on December 21. The three Choruses presen ted their numbers before a setting of stained glass windows. March was occupied with preparation for the Quad County Chorus at Harlan and the small group contest held April 7 and 8. Also, on April 22, there was a large group contest. Besides participating in these events, some small groups gained practice by singing at P . T.A. meetings, before Church organizations, Women's Clubs, and the assembly, at the Junior-Senior Banquet, and for Bacculaureate, and Commencement. - 39- "Zekiel Saw Da Wheel " is practiced for concert". This is also true in l aun ching a successful band. Each member must first be taught the fundamentals of music; then he must learn to blend with the other instruments in tone quality, pitch, intonation , an d bal ance. But, the success of the group rests upon the instructor. It is he who molds all the individuals into an effe ctive group. Every instructor has . his own methods of directing so when a new band instructor comes, everyone must be re-educated. The entire operation takes time , co-operation, desire, and plenty of practice. This year's forty-one members, unde r the direction of Mr. Wheeler, parti cipated in the Hoo-Doo-Days' Parade at Neola , and the State Marching Contest, in which a III ra ting wa s received. The ban d ended its marchin g season by performi ng at the Home coming festivities. The conr.ert band s eas on was occupied with u Christmas Concert, uad-Coun ty F estival, a Spring concert, and State Concert Ban d Con test. Besides these events a numbe r of members participated in the State Solo and Ensembl e Contest.
