The nuclear powered generating plant, in 1974 the largest such plant between the Mississippi River and the West coast, was named in honor of Gary L. Cooper, Sr. and Cary L. Cooper, father and son, in recognition of the distinguished leadership each and both contributed to public power in Nebraska and for the valuable service they individually and collectively provided to Nebraska Public Power District and its predecessor organization, Consumers Public Power District, as successive members of the Boards of Directors for more than a quarter of a century.]]>
