<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Fort Peck's Power Plant . . . is one of the highest buildings in Montana. A height of 271 feet is needed to enclose surge tanks that prevent water from reservoir tunnels damaging generator turbines. Four 24-foot tunnels, each about 1.25 miles long, bring reservoir water under the dam. One serves the power turbines, the other three permit release of storage water into the Missouri River. In the foreground are concrete baffles, used to de-energize water and prevent bank erosion. ]]></dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Hydroelectric energy for the power-hungry Missouri Basin will be generated in this massive powerhouse at Fort Randall Dam, Pickstown, South Dakota, starting March 15, 1954. When completed, the big concrete and steel power center will be 710 feet long and 100 feet wide. The structure is 150 feet from top to bottom with 50 feet extending below ground level. In addition to housing eight 40,000 kilowatt generators, the powerhouse will contain an erection bay for assembling the generators and turbines, a service bay consisting of a machine shop and offices and a control room. Construction of Fort Randall Dam started in 1946. It is one of four multiple-purpose dam and reservoir projects now under construction by the Corps of Engineers on the Missouri River. - Corps of Engineers photo]]></dcterms:description>
