It had a short life of 18 years.  In 1883 a grand jury declared the basement jail unfit for confinement and in 1884 the building was condemned by the Board of Health. The picture appeared in the Illustrated Atlas of Pottawattamie County, published in 1885.  Geise, a bottler and brewer, lived on Frank Street, near Harmony.  His plant, on the west side of Indian Creek near Nicholas Street, faced Broadway.  The old atlas belongs to Charles M. Roe of 515 Huntington Ave. ]]></dcterms:description>

At the left, the Council Bluffs Clinic has replaced the two houses. And the Hotel Chieftain now stands on the site of the Grand Hotel which burned. Note tree at right appears to be the same as that which appeared in the 1910 picture, plus the change in auto styles.]]></dcterms:description>
