    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Opening A Hatch...on the three-foot scale model of the steamship Bertrand is John Carrier, park service employee at the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge near Missouri Valley.  The steamer model, which the Bertrand museum just purchased for $300, was made by the late E.,E. Roberson, who used a variety of materials.  The whistle is actually a spent .22 caliber shell.  All the hatches, cables and winches on the model are functional.]]></dcterms:description>

The marker, designed by Refuge Manager James Salyer, shown with the tombstone, will serve to inform the public with a brief story about the boat while studies are being made on how to best preserve and display the historic relic.  In the meantime, a white rope outlines the position of the Bertrand underwater, just as it was found, covered with sand and water to prevent deterioration.]]></dcterms:description>
