<dcterms:description>Fifth Avenue Methodist Episcopal church, Fifth Avenue and Eighteenth street, is completing its forty-seventh year.
The church has carried on its ministry along with the development and growth of the west end of the city. It serves a large constituency.
In 1889 Rev. S.A. Alexander was sent by the annual conference to work in the west section of Council Bluffs. Services were first held at Overton's mission, Seventeenth street and Fourth avenue. Early in the spring of 1880 the site for the first church was chosen, which was the present location. Bishop Warren was present for the cornerstone ceremony on Sept. 10. The church was completed and dedicated in February of 1890, with Bishop Newman preaching the dedicatory sermon.
