<dcterms:description>The statue "The Fireman," was presented to the Fire Department back in the days of the first World War by W.M. Wollman, 606 Oakland Avenue, a retired jeweler. Wollman, a familiar figure at Central Fire Station, was well known for his carving of various figures in the clay banks on North Sixth Street. In creating the statue, symbolic of the fireman on constant duty, he clothed the figure in the rain coat, rubber boots and helmet of the fireman, clutching a fire hose, from which poured water into the fish pond at the base. Mr. Wollman only erected the statue; firemen later added the fish pond through their own efforts.
The lone fireman, who has stood for years in the middle of the fish pond on the west side of the Central Fire Station, may soon take up his vigil in a new location - in Fairview Cemetery.
